Pep Guardiola states Manchester City”don’t have many choices” in prison after he was forced to area midfielder Fernandinho as a makeshift centre-back.
The Brazilian has been deployed along with City’s only match senior central refuge, Nicolas Otamendi, in Wednesday’s 3-0 Champions League win.
Guardiola says midfielder Fernandinho has the personality and experience and Aymeric Laporte is recovering from knee surgery, although john Stones is out for five weeks because of a muscle injury.
“I did not have doubts that he would [seem comfortable in the back four]. That’s why he is so critical for everybody,” Guardiola said, after handing Fernandinho the additional responsibility of captaincy in his first start of the season.
“We do not have many options… he is the only one that I have. Other players can perform in that position but Fernandinho is a smart player intelligent – an amazing guy.
“He’s a great deal of knowledge and personality and what he states the people follow him in the locker room so that it’s crucial.”
Fernandinho, that produced two interceptions and had a passing accuracy of 90 percent against Shakhtar, added:”I have been training in this position since the start of the season.
“Now was my chance, I hope I could improve. It was a silent night at the back but the team have made a very good match… since we played as a team.”
